In an extraordinary experience, 12 New Orleans teens will learn about stem cell research and tissue engineering from biotechnology professionals

This type of engagement with professionals who do this work on a daily basis is life changing. It will continue building on the interest and promise these students have already shown in STEM fields”

— Dr. Calvin Mackie

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA , UNITED STATES, April 30, 2021 / — STEM NOLA is proud to partner with Obatala Sciences and CellSpring to engage at least a dozen high school students from the greater New Orleans area in a series of courses that will expose teens to careers in biotechnology startup companies. This extraordinary program focuses on providing high school students with exposure-rich, hands-on opportunities to engage deeply in work in the realm of STEM.

Over the course of three Saturday sessions on May 8, 15 and 22, students will receive comprehensive lab exposure to the work at both companies involving tissue engineering, stem cell research (stem cells isolated from adult fat tissue), and preclinical evaluation of potential therapeutics. Students will learn the route that new medicines and treatments take to the clinic and the steps that ensure they are safe. Further, students will learn the role that tissue engineering plays in improving the testing of new drugs.

“We are exceedingly grateful and incredibly proud to partner with both Obatala Sciences and CellSpring to expose our future innovators to the advancements being made in biotechnology research,” said STEM NOLA CEO Dr. Calvin Mackie. “This type of engagement with professionals who do this work on a daily basis is life changing. It will continue building on the interest and promise these students have already shown in STEM fields.”

Dr. Mackie, a former tenured Tulane Engineering professor, founded STEM NOLA in 2014 to expose, inspire and engage communities in learning opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The award-winning programming designs and delivers activities, programs and events. Since 2014, STEM NOLA has engaged more than 65,000 students – mostly underserved students of color – in hands-on STEM project-based learning.

“Obatala welcomes this opportunity to advance STEM NOLA's core mission and promote STEM education in our community,” said Obatala Sciences Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Jeffrey Gimble. “We are excited to have a chance to instruct and learn from the next generation of home-grown scientists recruited from our local high schools. By investing in their future, we are guaranteeing that biotech companies like ours will have a pipeline of talent to draw on in years to come.”

Obatala Sciences’ CEO, Dr. Trivia Frazier, agreed, saying, “We are proud to work with STEM NOLA on this project and are excited to see Dr. Mackie’s continued progress building this organization.”

Founded in 2017, Obatala Sciences is a biotechnology company that offers research products and services to scientists in medical industries and academia with the goal of advancing tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Obatala makes high-quality products that researchers use to discover better therapies for diseases like obesity and diabetes that significantly impact the human population.

CellSpring develops blood tests to screen at-risk patients for cancer with the goal of significantly shifting the timing of a diagnosis to earlier stages. CellSpring’s tests are based on a proprietary technology that effectively ‘tricks’ cancer cells into revealing the molecular makeup of small particles, called exosomes, that secrete into the blood. “We are proud of the work that STEM NOLA does to bring exposure, access, and opportunity to young innovators,” said Dr. Christopher Millan, CellSpring CEO. “I am thrilled to have this chance to contribute to that work, and collaborating with good friends at Obatala.”

Dr. Queralt Vallmajó-Martín, CELLSpring’s postdoctoral researcher, added, “I'm very excited to share with NOLA high school students our passion for science and introduce them to the fascinating world of biomaterials and stem cells. Our goal is to spark inspiration in these students to discover the unknown and see that the scientific world has a great deal to offer for personal and professional development. Looking forward to our Saturdays together!"

Ohio’s Oil & Gas Industry Off to Strong Start in 2021

We always try to impart on policymakers that Ohio is constantly competing (with other states and countries) for industry investment”

— Christina Polesovsky, API's Associate Director-Ohio

PENN VALLEY, PA, U.S., April 29, 2021 / — Ohio’s oil and gas production started out slowly in 2021, but the diminishing number of COVID-19 cases and accelerated vaccine roll-out have resulted in an increase in production that is supporting renewed petroleum product demand and new economic growth opportunities, according to Christina Polesovsky, the American Petroleum Institute’s Associate Director-Ohio.

Polesovsky will be a presenter at the Ninth Annual Utica Midstream Conference, slated for May 20, at the Holiday Inn Canton (Ohio) Belden Village. The one-day conference is presented by Shale and the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce.

“Ohio’s natural gas production from January 2020 to January 2021, was down 1.6 percent, year-over-year,” Polesovsky said. “With nine rigs drilling for gas in the Ohio Utica as of April 1, 2021, however, per-rig productivity is near record performance.”

Drilling permits granted by the state of Ohio fell by roughly 200 from 2019 to 2020, according to Polesovsky. But permits issued in the first 10 weeks of 2020, compared with the same period in 2021, increased by one-third – from 46 to 61 – provide another strong indicator of industry growth in 2021.

“It’s definitely a good sign,” Polesovsky said.

"Roughly 100 days into the Biden administration, Polesovsky said the oil & gas industry “stands ready to work with the administration on a number of issues – including climate change.”

“Climate change is real, and we also know the world will use more oil and gas 20 years from now compared to today. We don’t have to choose between a lower carbon future and sustaining and growing the more than 10 million American jobs supported by the industry,” Polesovsky said. “We can and must do both.”

Polesovsky said currently there are numerous O&G-related legislative and regulatory proposals under consideration in Columbus with potential to impact Ohio’s shale industry.

“We always try to impart on policymakers that Ohio is constantly competing (with other states and countries) for industry investment,” Polesovsky said. “We are fortunate that most policymakers understand the balance needed to keep Ohio business-friendly in order to retain and grow investment in our industry.”

American Homeowners Now Able to Get Commercial-Grade Indoor Air Purification

Covid-19 continues to be at the forefront of everyone’s daily activities: Where we work, how we shop, where children attend school, and more.

DELAVAN, WISCONSIN, UNITED STATES, April 29, 2021 / — And while a lot has been discussed about the immediate pandemic-related challenges facing businesses, schools and institutions, one area that is often overlooked is how to get cleaner, safer air inside your own home.

For many years, one of the most effective methods to ‘clean’ a home’s indoor air has been through ionization, a technology touted by countless ‘clean air solution’ providers as the best way to eliminate airborne viruses, bacteria and pathogens. But ionization’s historical issue for residential applications has seen the technology usually only available in small, single-room air purifiers, which may help one or perhaps two rooms receive the clean air benefits of ionization but leaves the rest of the home unprotected.

The innovative energy experts at Alternative Utility Services (AUS Energy) have solved this problem by putting together a new residential clean air solution that delivers the power and benefits of ionization throughout an entire home.

Using bipolar ionization technology, the AUS Energy Clean Home Air solution replicates nature’s process for cleaning the air by producing an equal amount of positive and negative oxygen ions, which then removes odors, particulates, viruses, bacteria, and volatile organic compounds from your home’s indoor air without any harmful byproducts, all at a very affordable price.

Airborne particles are charged by the ions, which causes them to cluster together so they can be caught by filters. As they divide to reproduce, bacteria and virus cells bond with oxygen ions, which destroys them. Odor-causing gases and other airborne particles are also neutralized because they are oxidized on contact with oxygen ions. And those oxygen ions cause a chemical reaction with volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which then breaks down their entire molecular structure.

Homeowners who have been worried about the spread of Covid-19 and want to ensure their home’s indoor spaces are safe can benefit from the AUS Energy Clean Home Air program. It is a simple yet effective way to provide cleaner, healthier indoor air for themselves and their families, but without the hassles of buying filters or replacing parts like most other ‘air purifiers’ require. Plus, the Clean Home Air solution releases zero ozone, making it completely safe for every indoor application.

Since today’s economy have caused many household budgets to be stretched, AUS Energy put together sensible, flexible and budget-friendly purchase options that make it easy for anyone who wants cleaner air inside their home to get the Clean Home Air solution right now.

Homeowners interested in learning more about the Clean Home Air program can contact AUS Energy at 800-392-4287, email at, or by visiting

Typically, the exposure to asbestos occurred in the 1950’s, 1960’s, 1970’s, or 1980’s.

Important Note from the US Navy Veterans Lung Cancer Advocate: “If your husband, dad, coworker or neighbor has just been diagnosed with lung cancer and you know they had significant exposure to asbestos in the navy, at a shipyard or while working at a factory, at power plant, public utility, or as a plumber, electrician welder, mechanic or any kind of skilled trades group in any state please have them call us anytime at 800-714-0303. Most people like this never get compensated-even though the asbestos trust funds were set up for them too. We are trying to change this sad fact. Frequently compensation for people like this might exceed $100,000.” https://USNavyLungCancer.Com

According to the American Cancer Society for nonsmokers who have been exposed to asbestos in their workplace the risk of lung cancer is five times that of unexposed workers.

States with the highest incidence of lung cancer include Kentucky, West Virginia, Maine, Tennessee, Mississippi, Ohio, Indiana, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Alabama, and Delaware.
