NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA , UNITED STATES, June 30, 2021 / — STEM NOLA, a non-profit committed to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, is providing STEM learning to a wide range of K-12 students across the region this summer, helping children recoup some of the schooling lost when classes were interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

While providing both in-person and virtual summer camps to students throughout Louisiana and the Gulf Coast, STEM NOLA also operated special programming through partnerships with the New Orleans Pelicans, Chevron and Jefferson Parish Schools.

“It is important for STEM NOLA to intensify our STEM learning programs as much as possible to help fill in the gaps caused by disruptions during the school year,” said Dr. Calvin Mackie, founder and president of STEM NOLA. “We are achieving that objective with innovative programing that continues our tradition of bringing STEM education into communities that need it most. Raising awareness of STEM can create pathways to quality jobs and careers for students in under-resourced communities.”

For instance, STEM NOLA partnered with the New Orleans Pelicans, Learn Fresh and Chevron Gulf of Mexico Business Unit to offer students a fun and unique STEM experience, "Scoring with STEM: Using the Game of Basketball to Learn STEM.”

STEM NOLA delivered basketball-themed STEM kits provided by Learn Fresh and NBA swag to 134 3rd through 8th graders across the region. Students learned about lung capacity and played NBA Math Hoops, a program helping students learn fundamental math skills through the game of basketball. Nationwide, 82 percent of eighth graders from low-income families are not proficient in math. Through NBA Math Hoops, students often develop an appreciation and love for math.

The highlight of the day for each student and facilitator was building their own miniature basketball arena complete with fans, lights and sensors that activated fan noise when a basket was made from the attached catapult. “My son had a great time today, thank you to all the sponsors and facilitators! I sat nearby and learned a few new things myself. We never would have gotten this experience in our small community if it weren't for virtual events like this one,” said one parent following the event.

“This is why digital access and STEM engagement are important,” said Dr. Mackie. “Thanks to sponsors, like AT&T and Entergy, we were able to make our virtual programming possible when COVID shut down in-person events. STEM NOLA also partnered with Jefferson Parish Schools (JP Schools) to engage thousands of students in specialized STEM programming during the school district’s first ever Summer Bridge Program that is set to end this week.

STEM NOLA provided tools to offer STEM instruction to at least 3,200 students during the month-long Jefferson Summer Bridge and offered training for teachers, who learned how to better expose and inspire students in STEM. The goal was to tackle STEM issues and challenges facing students in Jefferson Parish communities and emphasize the technical skills needed in the 21st century to prepare them for quality jobs and careers in STEM-related fields.

During the STEM enrichment program, students participated in hands-on and technology-based STEM activities from June 8th until June 30th. In addition to the weekly themed STEM activities, students built their own boats, cars and rockets, while engaging in analysis, trials and discussion of the scientific and engineering theories applied.

“Our goal is to provide students with the learning they need to be successful. Due to school closures in March 2020 and pandemic-related learning disruptions, students may have experienced learning losses,” said JP Schools Superintendent James Gray. “This year, our teachers, support staff, and administrators have stepped up to meet our students where they are and provide quality teaching and learning. However, it was important that we continued to provide accelerated learning opportunities to students this summer.”

CYRPUS, June 30, 2021 / — A team of scientists involved in NanoSolveIT, an EU nanoinformatics project funded under Horizon 2020, completed a study that was published in Nature journal Scientific Data (, in order to unleash the full potential of already existing transcriptomics data on ENM exposures. “While large amounts of transcriptomics data from ENM exposures have already been accumulated, a unified, easily accessible and reusable collection of transcriptomics data for ENMs was lacking” says Antreas Afantitis, NanoSolveIT Project Coordinator “The team manually curated, and preprocessed and unified a collection of 101 data sets, covering a range of ENMs, organisms, and exposure setups.”
As Professor Dario Greco, Director of the Finnish Hub for Development and Validation of Integrated Approaches, at Tampere University says “In an attempt to improve the FAIRness of already existing transcriptomics data for ENMs, we curated a collection of homogenized transcriptomics data from human, mouse and rat ENM exposures in vitro and in vivo including extracting the physicochemical characteristics of the ENMs used in each study from the associated publications.”
The traditional methods of toxicology, used for decades now to scrutinize the safety levels of engineered materials, provide us with a useful tool. However the successful marriage of computer technology and bioinformatics has given birth to a new generation of Toxicogenomics (TGx) tools. Their main function is to collect and store data sets which are further explored and used as the basis for development of predictive models.
The application of TGx data to nanosafety can provide novel possibilities for grouping and classifying ENMs based on the similarity of molecular alterations in biological systems they induce, and help to derive biomarkers to identify nano-specific signatures.

Transcriptomics technologies, used to study an organism as the sum of its RNA transcripts (known as the transcriptome), are the frontline of TGx. While large amounts of transcriptomics data for multiple ENMs have already been generated, offering a valuable resource for future studies and applications, the data are scattered across public repositories, and their FAIRness is currently hampered by their heterogeneous nature and a lack of standardization in the preprocessing and analysis.

The NanoPharos database (, where all the datasets generated within the H2020 NanoSolveIT ( and NanoCommons ( projects are available, assists accessibility, interoperability and reusability of curated datasets. Recently, CSNRI colleagues, who had a long-term working partnership with a UK oil refinery, were made aware of an issue with the refinery’s fire suppression system. Vital refurbishment work was required on a 1 million+ gallon sea water storage tank that feeds the system. Refinery engineers realized the valve which should isolate the tank from the remainder of the fire system, was seized and could not be closed.

The operators needed a way to install a valve without shutting off the water supply that the plant relies on for its fire protection. Having worked with CSNRI, they turned to the team for support. CSNRI immediately recommended they use AVT’s insertion valve.

The AVT EZ Valve, a valve which can be installed without the need to shut off the water, has been used widely across the U.K. and U.S. within water authority systems but its installation in industrial applications in the U.K. is, so far, limited.

Once the decision was made that the EZ Valve would be able to resolve the issue, the team at CSNRI contacted their AVT colleagues who would carry out the install, Regional Account Director Jason Taylor, and Engineering Manager Lee Kirkham.

The 8” valve was installed on an exposed carbon steel line in a relatively cramped area. The EZ Valve is installed using a low-profile EM (End Milling) machine which mills a 120o slot across the top of the pipe and enables a resilient wedge gate to be inserted. The millings created, or swarf, is flushed out of the valve during the milling process by the pressure of the water in the pipe, meaning the quality of the water is maintained. This all takes place without the need to shut off the water and the small slot milled also ensures the integrity of the pipe is not affected. Jason and Lee completed the install within just two hours.

CSNRI’s UK Managing Director Sean Connolly said: “CSNRI and AVT deliver very different product ranges but both work within critical infrastructure. We are all aware of the range of products available so when we identified the need for a new valve at one of our customers’ plants, we know the EZ Valve would be the ideal solution. HOUSTON, TX, USA, June 29, 2021 / — On March 24, Mexico’s president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) announced that Pemex had bought out Shell Oil Company’s 50% ownership in the refinery in Deer Park, Texas.

If approved, the operatorship of the Deer Park refinery by Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) or one of its subsidiaries would pose new safety, environmental and economic risks to the Deer Park community and the greater Houston area. According to a report issued by Houston-based Mexico Energy Intelligence™ (MEI 939), Pemex is not yet prepared to assume the operatorship of the refinery, which had been exercised by Shell Oil Company for 28 years.

“Pemex is not yet ready,” insists George Baker, the principal author of the report, “for three reasons.”

The first reason concerns the present qualifications of the buyer. According to the report, Pemex has not yet invested in the recruitment of bilingual executive and technical talent with experience in compliance with American safety, environmental, and labor codes. Ceding operational control to an unqualified buyer brings brings new risks to the refinery infrastructure, employees, and the local economy and environment.

The second reason concerns the company’s institutional governance: By law, the President of Mexico has the right to name and remove the director-general of Pemex. “What the law doesn’t say but what everyone in Mexico knows is that the President has the informal authority to name, remove or force to resign any civil servant he chooses, including those who are Pemex employees.”

Should the sale go through, the President of Mexico would have the ability to name loyalists to key positions of plant manager and directors of Human Relations, Finance and Health-Safety-and-Environmental Compliance.

The third reason concerns the buyer’s motives. The purchase of the refinery is advocated solely by Mexico’s current president but without a business rationale, that is, a commercial agenda. AMLO’s strategy is about achieving better political optics back home.

For the President, buying or building a refinery is an easy way to increase the barrels of daily refinery capacity that are legally controlled by Pemex—by 170,000 with Deer Park and another 340,000 with a greenfield refinery at Dos Bocas, Tabasco.

Pemex would send more of its heavy-grade crude oil to the Deer Park refinery and return additional barrels of refined products to Mexico by boat, train, or pipeline. The president’s agenda of achieving “self-sufficiency” in petroleum products would thereby advance.

Baker discerns, however, that there is no economic rationale for seeking self-sufficiency in refined products when Mexico sits across from the U.S. Gulf Coast where there are dozens of refineries. “There would be opportunity costs and additional maintenance expense by increasing the intake of Pemex’s heavy crude oil,“ Baker observes. “Likewise, prioritizing Mexico’s domestic market for refined products would forego higher margins in other markets.”

The report concludes that Pemex’s acquiring operatorship should be deferred until the company has made adequate preparation, including the recruitment of bilingual executives, and until there were to come into force a governance structure that would be feature irreversible electrical isolation from the President of Mexico.

Baker believes that “city officials in Deer Park and the greater Houston area, and the region’s Members of Congress, should alert the Biden administration that the safety and environment of the Houston region should not be put at risk by a transfer of refinery operations to a yet-to-be qualified buyer that is under the control of a foreign sovereign.” He adds, "geopolitical goodwill toward Mexico must not compromise safety at home."

"Del mismo modo, priorizar el mercado interno de México para los productos refinados renunciaría a márgenes más altos en otros mercados".

El informe concluye que la adquisición por parte de Pemex de la refinería Deer Park debe ser aplazada hasta que la compañía haya hecho la preparación adecuada, incluyendo la contratación de ejecutivos bilingües, y hasta que entre en vigor una estructura de gobierno que cuente con un aislamiento eléctrico irreversible del Presidente de México.
