Iran Threatens Retaliation Against US Bases in Middle East

(MENAFN) Iran has warned that it will target American military bases in the Middle East if the United States launches an attack, according to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Indirect talks between the US and Iran took place in Oman on Friday amid rising tensions following last year’s strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. The attacks were justified by the US as preventing Tehran from developing nuclear weapons, a claim Iran denies.

US President Donald Trump has threatened further military action unless Iran returns to negotiations, recently dispatching an “armada” to the region and demanding restrictions on Iran’s uranium enrichment and missile programs.

Friday’s meeting marked the first effort to ease the standoff, with no major breakthroughs announced, though both sides agreed to continue discussions.

Speaking to Al Jazeera on Saturday, Araghchi described the talks as “a good starting point” but highlighted lingering “mistrust” following last year’s strikes. He emphasized that Iran would retaliate if attacked:

”If Washington attacks us, there is no possibility of attacking US soil, but we will strike their bases in the region.”

Araghchi also said Iran is prepared for the possibility of war with the US but stressed that the nuclear issue must be resolved through dialogue without threats or pressure. He maintained that uranium enrichment is Iran’s right, stating the country will retain enriched uranium domestically and adjust levels according to its needs. He further ruled out negotiations over Iran’s missile program, calling it “purely defensive.”

Trump described the Oman talks as “very good” but continued to issue warnings, stating that failure to reach an agreement would bring “very steep” consequences for Iran. Shortly after the discussions, the US State Department imposed new sanctions on over 30 Iranian entities, individuals, and vessels linked to alleged illicit petroleum and petrochemical trade.
