BERGEN COUNTY TO REFLECT ON SEPTEMBER 11 ATTACKS 25 YEARS LATER

Candlelight Vigil on September 10 Featuring New Jersey Wind Symphony; Annual Memorial Ceremony on September 11 at Overpeck County Park
LEONIA, N.J. – Bergen County Executive James J. Tedesco, III and the Board of Commissioners announce that the County of Bergen will be hosting two events in honor and remembrance of 25 years since the attacks on September 11.
A special Memorial Vigil will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2026,at 6:30 PM,at the Amphitheater at Overpeck County Park, featuring the New Jersey Wind Symphony. As the nation observes 25 years since the attacks on September 11, this Memorial Vigil will offer a deeply reflective and meaningful tribute. The program will include musical accompaniment, remarks from community leaders, a tribute to the victims and their families, recognition of the sacrifice of first responders, and a candle lighting ceremony honoring all those affected by the events of September 11.
The County will also host its Annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony on Friday, September 11, 2026,at 3:30 PM, at the /11 Memorial in Overpeck County Park. This ceremony will provide another meaningful opportunity to come together as a community and remember the lasting impact of September 11.
The terrorist attacks, which claimed 2,977 lives and changed our nation forever, deeply affected Bergen County. A total of 347 Bergen County residentswere lost on that day, and first responders from across the County responded to Ground Zero with courage, bravery, and selflessness. The lives of those residents—and the sacrifices of those who answered the call—remain forever in the memory of Bergen County.
The County continues to honor not only those lost on September 11, 2001, but also those whose lives have been claimed since due to long-term illnesses, such as cancers caused by exposure to toxic dust and chemicals at Ground Zero.
“On this anniversary, we honor the lives lost––including the 347 Bergen County residents, the bravery of our first responders, and those who continue to suffer from 9/11-related illness,” said Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco. “As a volunteer firefighter, I will never forget responding to Ground Zero 25 years ago, alongside fellow first responders. I hope our residents and neighbors join us as we remember this solemn day and stand as a reflection of a community that refuses to be fractured, even in the face of the unimaginable,” continued County Executive Tedesco.
