TEEX Opens New Workforce Development Facility in Downtown Corpus Christi
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS — The Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) officially opened its new advanced skills workforce training facility with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, September 23, at 223 N Chaparral St. in downtown Corpus Christi.
The $12.5 million project involved renovating 15,000 square feet on the third floor of Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi’s (TAMU–CC) Chaparral Building into flexible technical training space, including reconfigurable training areas and offices. The facility houses the Corpus Christi extension of the TEEX Workforce Development program, bringing TEEX’s workforce training to the Coastal Bend region.
TEEX’s Workforce Development program trains workers for careers that are especially in demand in the Coastal Bend region, including manufacturing, maritime and petrochemical industries, among others. Course offerings cover maintenance and troubleshooting, occupational health and safety, process improvement, cybersecurity, heavy equipment and professional skills. Students in the program can earn industry-recognized certifications, and TEEX works with Corpus Christi-area school districts to promote these career opportunities to students in the region.
The Corpus Christi facility builds on workforce training TEEX has delivered in other parts of the state for years. In 2022, TEEX launched the Workforce Development program in the Rio Grande Valley, customizing courses to regional employer demand and labor trends. The Texas A&M University System has committed $40 million toward workforce training facilities, including a 32,844-square-foot building under construction near the Port of Brownsville. Through TEEX’s Brownsville Workforce Development program, more than 30 Rio Grande Valley companies have enrolled employees in TEEX training since the program began, and state funding allows TEEX to offer the courses at no cost to Valley residents.
“Since we expanded our program to the Coastal Bend region, we have relied on the support of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, local businesses and other organizations who have graciously shared their facilities with us to provide training,” said TEEX Agency Director David Coatney. “We are thankful for the support they provided to us and for the strong relationships we have built across the region. The new permanent facility allows TEEX to build upon that foundation and continue to invest in the workforce, the businesses and the communities that make this region strong.”
The ribbon-cutting ceremony included remarks from Texas A&M University System Chancellor Glenn Hegar and Coatney.
“The Coastal Bend is growing, and employers need skilled people who are ready to go to work. This new facility will give Texans access to hands-on training close to home while helping TEEX build the workforce this region and our state need to keep growing,” said Texas A&M University System Chancellor Glenn Hegar.
